The taste and smell of alcoholic drinks are potent relapse triggers, partly because they come to seem more palatable with repeated drinking. By analysing the microstructure of licking, Milan Valyear, Noémie Eustachon and Jon found that lick bouts for alcohol gradually lengthen relative to water, and that an alcohol-paired flavour partly maintains this in extinction: a sign that the flavour itself has gained palatability.
